contacts and christmas…

I gotta tell you, I knew that getting contacts would be a big change but I def. wasn’t prepared for all the rigamarole that goes along with buying them. My first appointment was on Monday, Oct. 15 and luckily my prescription hadn’t changed so instead of buying new frames and lenses, I decided to take the plunge and spend that money on contacts and try to regain my peripheral vision instead. :)

I really liked the doc- she was very cool and spent alot of time helping me get set up with my first pair to try for a week. Well, they were scratchy and blurry and I only made it about 5 days in a row before I gave up. I really beat myself up, thinking I was totally doing something wrong. Well, I had a follow-up appt. a few days ago on Monday and I explained to her how they felt and she said they were probably “too tight.” Too tight??! Who knew contacts could be too tight?! Man, when I hear “too tight” I think of blue jeans from the 80s, not contact lenses…

So she ordered some new ones and they came in today. I went down there after work, tried them on and the left lens fit so perfectly I couldn’t even tell it was there (SWEET!!) The right hand lens tho, was scratchy and when they did the eye test I couldn’t even read the really big letters- it was that blurry…oops! After checking to make sure I didn’t put it on my eyeball wrong-side out (yes, I did it right), she determined that the lens was probably defective. Now they’re ordering a new set and I’ll have to wait yet another week…bummer…but hey, I’ve been 5 or 6 years without my peripheral vision, another week won’t kill me… hopefully the next ones will work out.

NOW, appointment finished, I find myself with a little time to kill at the mall I NEVER go to, so I decided to try to find a couple of light sweaters since the weather is starting to turn cooler (FINALLY!!). I wander down to Macy’s and browse their sale racks with no luck. Walking out, I look over and notice that another store was having a sale so I go in and a few minutes later I’m trying on this cute sweater and for some reason, my subconscious brought the elevator music playing in the background to the foreground of my attention… “HOLY CRAP- is that CHRISTMAS MUSIC??!!” Lords of Light they were REALLY playing Christmas music!! Even worse- it was some insipid Luther Vandross holiday tune from the early 90s.

Now, alright, having worked retail for way more years than I care to count, I KNOW that the christmas stock starts arriving as early as August (we even used to get holiday books in July when I worked at Hastings) but PLAYING HOLIDAY MUSIC BEFORE HALLOWEEN??! You gotta be effen kiddin’ me…

If they keep pushing up the date that the Christmas music starts, eventually they can just play it all year long. That’s when I move to another country!

Thanks for the heads-up, though. If I have to go to the mall anytime soon I’ll remember to bring my MP3 player & earbuds… which is also a great way to deal with crying kids while shopping!
The mall is much better place when all I can hear is Bob Marley singing to me :)
