manic pixie dream girls

A couple of months ago, I was tickled to hear this piece on NPR about the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl.” Finally! Another archetype we (as in me and Tim) love is defined! haha

“…they don’t have lives, they don’t have carreers, they just frolic and have fun and imbue people with a sense of life’s infinite possibilities.”

Hands down, probably one of my all-time favorite MPDGs is Amelie:

following at a fairly close second is Natalie Portman’s Character in Garden State:

So, tell me, who is your favorite Manic Pixie Dream Girl?? List ‘em all out in the comments and we can compare notes. :D

Amelie definitely! Wait, wait, they are all on the tip of my brain! I’ll have to sneak a think on this one…

Okay, I’ve been wracking my brain since you posted this and all I can come up with is Alicia Silverstone in “Clueless” and Reese Witherspoon in “Legally Blonde.” But I don’t feel like they fit the type of the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl” because they don’t necessarily provide a foil for the male characters, as Natalie Portman’s character does in “Garden State.” These characters are also way more self-centered than Amelie, as well.

I guess for now I could offer a less manic pixie dream girl in the Eva character of Jim Jarmusch’s “Stranger Than Paradise.”
