just like heaven?
Posted by Stacey on Wednesday Feb 11, 2009 Under MusicWell, today has already been one of those days and it’s not even noon yet. We saw Jason Marsalis play last night (I’ll post about that later) so we didn’t get home until quite late which made us extra tired this morning. Even worse, I woke up thinking today was Thursday… what a drag it was when I found it it’s actually WEDNESDAY. sigh. : \
Of course, being extra tired, we were moving slower than usual and ran out of time to make lunches before leaving the house. So, around 11:30, I find myself waiting in line to grab a salad at the Starbucks dangerously located in the first floor of our building.
I’m staring at the wall, zoning out, when the music playing overhead slowly pans into focus over the scream of the coffee grinder. My “Back Brain” grabs it, runs a search (I recently installed the Google Brain Search beta app) and a few milliseconds later, it kicks a file to my “Front Brain” entitled, “Hey! That’s a cover of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven!’” Then that sweet little app sends me a bulleted list of several other “files:”

hmmm… I guess we listened to that album quite alot back in the day… heh heh.
Anyway, so now I’m awake again and thinking, “Damn, this song is old enough that it’s being turned into a cover??!” I start to get a little bummed about being old and THEN I start thinking, “Crap, all those bitter middle-aged people used to come into Spec’s Music and bitch to us about their fav songs being turned into covers. I REFUSE be one of THOSE people!” I shake off the funk and get a grip as the line moves forward. This particular cover actually turns out to be quite good.
Humming the tune, I head back up to my office and search the interwebs for that particular version while I eat my lunch. I’m shocked to find a dozen other cover of that song!! geez! But despite all those covers I didn’t find the one that was playing downstairs. weird.
Do you have a favorite? I kinda like the rockabye baby version but maybe that’s because I’m still sleepy.

Goldfinger, definitely. At least it’s an interesting cover instead of doing the typical one of two things: making it a ballad (or muzak – bleh!) or doing a virtual carbon copy.
Damn the man. Save the Empire.
mwahahahaha

Have you heard other Rockabye Baby songs? I have their version of “Sober”. they are eerily relaxing- thinking of collecting a few for baby #2.

Something recently possessed me to add a bunch of Cure and Smiths songs to my mp3 player… I don’t think I was quite prepared for the violent BLAST to the past that ensued! Whoa!

Keiti- yeah, I dig the Goldfinger version too. John Drum pointed out that I forgot to add the Dinosaur Jr. version too- I think it slipped out of the copy paste action when I was setting up the widget- oops.
Mollie- I had a feeling the Rockabye Baby was for chilluns. I love toy piano when it’s used in popular music as long as it’s not overused. It IS eerily relaxing! I’ll have to check out the other albums. so it’s still “Baby #2?” No names yet? :)
Hope- I unearthed all my Echo & The Bunnymen, Cure, Smiths, Morrisey, etc. over the holiday break and loaded them up into a gigantic playlist and nearly had a meltdown from the memory & emotion overload. I won’t be doing that again anytime soon- not at that level of intensity anyway! haha It always amazes me how memories and emotions are SO closely tied to music- at least for me.
