just like heaven?

Posted by Stacey on Wednesday Feb 11, 2009 Under Music

Well, today has already been one of those days and it’s not even noon yet. We saw Jason Marsalis play last night (I’ll post about that later) so we didn’t get home until quite late which made us extra tired this morning. Even worse, I woke up thinking today was Thursday… what a drag it was when I found it it’s actually WEDNESDAY. sigh. : \

Of course, being extra tired, we were moving slower than usual and ran out of time to make lunches before leaving the house. So, around 11:30, I find myself waiting in line to grab a salad at the Starbucks dangerously located in the first floor of our building.

I’m staring at the wall, zoning out, when the music playing overhead slowly pans into focus over the scream of the coffee grinder. My “Back Brain” grabs it, runs a search (I recently installed the Google Brain Search beta app) and a few milliseconds later, it kicks a file to my “Front Brain” entitled, “Hey! That’s a cover of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven!’” Then that sweet little app sends me a bulleted list of several other “files:”

Grounded at home Friday night waiting for Rach to call.
Driving around Palm City with Rach.
Driving to high school with Rach.
Driving home from high school with Rach.
Driving to the beach with Rach.
    Driving to IRCC with Rach.
Driving to Ocean Palms with Rach.
    Driving to Gainesville with Rach.
Driving to a party at Brent’s house with Rach.
Driving to a party at Fred’s house with Rach.
Driving to a party at Jesse’s house with Rach.
In order to show you the most relevant results we have omitted some entries very similar to the 96 already displayed, If you like, you can repeat the search with
    the omitted results included.

hmmm… I guess we listened to that album quite alot back in the day… heh heh.

Anyway, so now I’m awake again and thinking, “Damn, this song is old enough that it’s being turned into a cover??!” I start to get a little bummed about being old and THEN I start thinking, “Crap, all those bitter middle-aged people used to come into Spec’s Music and bitch to us about their fav songs being turned into covers. I REFUSE be one of THOSE people!” I shake off the funk and get a grip as the line moves forward. This particular cover actually turns out to be quite good.

Humming the tune, I head back up to my office and search the interwebs for that particular version while I eat my lunch. I’m shocked to find a dozen other cover of that song!! geez! But despite all those covers I didn’t find the one that was playing downstairs. weird.

Do you have a favorite? I kinda like the rockabye baby version but maybe that’s because I’m still sleepy.

This short film by Ted Chung is absolutely lovely. I’m so glad I took the time to watch it:

Am loving this music video, very clever. I showed it to Tim this evening and he said, “Wow, it’s not MTV anymore, is it?” :) I agree. It’s much, much nicer.

digging this today…

Can you tell what we’ve been Netflixing this week? I’m really digging this song from the end of episode 6 (RSSers will have to click through for both recordings):

A little Googling revealed that this was also once recorded by Don McClean:

Great series, the writing is phenomenal, and we’re loving it despite the horrible feeling that we’re contracting lung cancer just from watching. *cough, cough* I can’t believe we used to live like that. gah!

manic pixie dream girls II

Posted by Stacey on Thursday Jan 22, 2009 Under Film

Last night, I was thinking about my Manic Pixie Dream Girl post from December. Earlier in the day, I’d seen an article about a new movie, 500 Days of Summer, coming out this summer, that talked about Zooey Deschanel’s character being MPDG. I’m wondering if this will be true. It was hard to tell from the preview. Tim and I adore her and can’t wait to see this new movie!

So, that got me thinking once again (like I do- haha) about MPDG’s in other films I’ve seen. I wonder, in a darker light, whether or not Kate Winslet’s character, Clementine, in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” would count as a MPDG? And if that’s the case, could the Marla Singer character in Fight Club count as one as well? :)

“This is cancer, right?”

Love this song by the Avett Brothers. Such a GREAT concert back in ’07 (can’t believe it’s been that long since we danced all night with Ken and Rhaina!).

happy new year!

Posted by Stacey on Wednesday Jan 21, 2009 Under Life

I just realized that I never said ‘Happy New Year’ here! Sorry! Things got pretty busy over the holiday break so I didn’t get a chance to post updates or anything. 2008 pretty much sucked all around so we’ve both pinned quite alot of hope to 2009. We’ll see what happens.

Probably the most difficult thing of 2008, despite all the job stress for both of us, was the loss of so many friends. There was a point where we were going to scream if we had to go to another funeral. Losing our two cats not even four months apart was probably the most difficult though. People say, “they’re just cats,” but honestly these two kitties were a huge part of our family. It was really tough.

Upsides of 2008, and there were quite a few: the chance to see family and friends throughout the year, Tim hiking a nice chunk of the Appalachian Trail, Aaron’s doctoral graduation (prolly the highlight of 2008), Court’s Mom’s cancer remission, Rachel’s pregnancy, and other cool things that aren’t at the top of my tired brain right now.

2008 = done. 2009 = hope.
