I do believe Maui just punched her ticket on the gravy train… ;) This cat is just way too cute (and so is her human, haha). Oh, and I guess the name is going to stay.
According to the Sacred Texts Archive, Maui is “a demi god whose name should probably be pronounced Ma-u-i (Ma-oo-e). The meaning of the word is by no means clear. It may mean “to live,” “to subsist.” It may refer to beauty and strength, or it may have the idea of “the left hand” or “turning aside.” The word is recognized as belonging to remote Polynesian antiquity.”
She came with that name. I want to change it to Lily but Tim wants to leave it. We’ll see.
She a diluted tortie with more personality than Anthony Robbins and Robin Williams combined.
kindness of strangers…
Posted by Stacey on Monday Dec 22, 2008 Under Kindess of Strangers, library stuffThis morning, at the RefDesk, I helped one of our international students with a computer/printing problem. He couldn’t get any of his grad school application paperwork to print out. After messing around with the system, I was finally able to get everything to work for him. He bowed and thanked me profusely before leaving and then a few minutes later, he and his girlfriend came back to the desk with a bottled coffee drink as a thank you gift! Awww! SO sweet!
I thanked them and told them they really didn’t have to do such a thing because I love messing around with the computers and helping out. He insisted I take it and thanked me again. :) So nice! I hope he gets into grad school- we need more thoughtful people like him in academia! ;D
woke up singing this song
Posted by Stacey on Saturday Dec 20, 2008 Under MusicI woke up with this song in my head this morning and have been singing/humming it to myself all day. (sorry, RSSers will have to click through for the widget)…
Knowing that it’s one of Tim’s all-time favorite albums (up there with anything by Coldplay! har har!!), I took pity and waited until he left for his gig tonight to crank up the full album at the casa. :)
Although, I really like his self-titled album (along with all of his others), I especially enjoy Daylight- it’s one of my roadtrip staples.
heavy rotation
Posted by Stacey on Saturday Dec 20, 2008 Under MusicElbow is still at the top of the heavy rotation list on Laptop de Stacey this week but Sea Wolf began to compete for the #1 slot around mid week. (Sorry, RSSers, you’lll have to click through to play the widget)…
I’ve seen 79% of IMDB’s top 250 films. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not. :) How many have you seen?

manic pixie dream girls
Posted by Stacey on Tuesday Dec 9, 2008 Under FilmA couple of months ago, I was tickled to hear this piece on NPR about the “Manic Pixie Dream Girl.” Finally! Another archetype we (as in me and Tim) love is defined! haha
“…they don’t have lives, they don’t have carreers, they just frolic and have fun and imbue people with a sense of life’s infinite possibilities.”
Hands down, probably one of my all-time favorite MPDGs is Amelie:
following at a fairly close second is Natalie Portman’s Character in Garden State:
So, tell me, who is your favorite Manic Pixie Dream Girl?? List ‘em all out in the comments and we can compare notes. :D
waiting to explode like christmas
Posted by Stacey on Tuesday Dec 9, 2008 Under Work, books, library stuffI ran across this great old quote from Sandra Cisneros this afternoon while helping someone research a paper topic:
“Everything is holding its breath inside me. Everything is waiting to explode like Christmas. I want to be all new and shiny. I want to sit out bad at night, a boy around my neck and the wind under my skirt. Not this way, every evening talking to the trees, leaning out my window, imagining what I can’t see.”
